Essex University is close to filling all available spaces on first-year courses - just weeks after A-level results were announced.

Of 1,730 undergraduate places available for the new term, starting in October, 1,640 have already been taken up.

Admissions boss Mike Nicholson told the Gazette: "It looks like we will be full by the end of this week."

Departments including law, politics, economics and history have accepted a high proportion of applicants who listed Essex as their first-choice university this year.

The popularity of courses has allowed tutors to meet quotas without heavy reliance on the last-minute "clearing" system.

Numbers have also been boosted by an increase in the number of Colchester and Tendring students opting to attend their local university.
