Five illegal immigrants were arrested after an eagle-eyed villager saw them jumping out of a large lorry.
The man flagged down a police officer after seeing the four men and one women make their getaway at Wormingford yesterday.
The five, from Sri Lanka and India, were arrested and held at Colchester police station before being picked up by immigration officials.
The lorry driver, who had arrived in Dover from Portugal, was questioned by police but released without charge.
There was nothing to suggest that the lorry driver knew that the illegal immigrants were inside his vehicle.
