Record goal-hero Gary Bennett scored an amazing six goals on Thursday night as Braintree walloped Leyton Pennant 8-2.

But modest Bennett shrugged off the accolades and said: "The lads set them up, I just tap 'em in."

The six strikes takes Bennett's tally to 12 goals in seven games and puts him on course to beat the club record, which he set himself, of 60 goals in a season.

The best of the bunch last night was his final goal, a delicious lob which left the keeper stranded.

Bennett said: "We didn't play particularly well for the first 15 minutes but then we clicked.

"Ian Gedny did really well and scored. He is excellent to play alongside. He does all my running and sets up the chances.

"It was one of those nights for me where the ball just kept coming for me in the right area.

"The team is playing well again and that is all down to manager Tony Hall."

Braintree got off to a poor start and went behind to a controversial penalty.

But the Iron bit back with John Bishop and Gedny adding to Bennett's total.

Hall said: "Benno had six chances and scored six goals, he is a finisher, simple as that."

"We took a bit of time to get going but when we got the bit between our teeth and started passing the ball around we looked good.

"Everyone played really well, Ian Gedny worked hard and showed how unselfish he is."

The win pushed Braintree in to second place in Ryman Division One and are the division's leading scorers with 22 goals.
