Horse owners were today warned to be vigilant after a number of attacks in four villages.
Horses in Hullbridge, Hockley, Hawkwell and Rochford have had their tails slashed while grazing in their paddocks over the past month.
In the latest incident, which happened over the weekend in Rochford, three horses were left with chopped tails and one without a mane.
Their distressed owner, a 29-year-old woman who did not want to be named, called This Is Essex to appeal for witnesses to come forward. She said: "Two of my horses were attacked on Friday night and the other was cut on Saturday.
"I can't believe somebody would do this to them."
The attacks happened some time between 6pm and 4am on both nights and the horses' owner said the hair was definitely cut by a knife rather than scissors.
Sgt Chris Jones, of Rayleigh police, said: "We have been investigating a series of incidents over the past couple of months. Twelve horses have had their tails cut and whoever is doing it seems to be moving through the area."
Any witnesses should ring Rayleigh police on 01268 775533.
