An investigation began today after an Essex man was killed in a parachute accident.

The 24-year-old victim was identified by police as Ian George of Benfleet. He died yesterday during a charity parachute jump at Headcorn Aerodrome near Ashford, Kent.

Mr George's family have asked for 24 hours privacy so they can come to terms with the tragedy.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "It appears the main canopy was deployed, but for some reason which is being investigated, the reserve chute also deployed and the two chutes became entangled.

"He attempted to rid himself of one of the chutes and lost both of them."

The accident happened at 4.05pm and was the second fatality at Headcorn aerodrome this year.

Parachute instructor Andrew Kelly died in May when his chute failed.

A joint investigation involving the British Parachute Association and Kent Police was launched today.
