A vicar has condemned vandals who desecrated gravestones at a Braintree church. Two tombstones were pushed over and another smashed at St Mary's and St Christopher's Church, Panfield Lane.

The Rev Philip Meader said: "It is upsetting for people who own the tombs and is a direct attack on people's families.

"I think when there is no respect for the dead there can hardly be any respect for the living."

Mr Meader said the church had no lighting and was in a isolated position.

The vandals caused £450 of damage during the incident which was discovered on Thursday.

Anyone who may have seen anything should contact PC Richard Buckland at Braintree police on 01376 551312.
