Heybridge Swifts manager Roy McDonough is still looking for the right combination in his forward line to put the side on a climb away from the bottom of the Premier Division.

Saturday saw him don his boots to partner the returning Wayne Adcock with Terry Rayner moving back to his customary position on the wing.

In Heybridge's First attack, Adcock put in a good cross and McDonough had his header cleared off the line.

Swifts lost the services of Jason Cook early on and Daniel Reeve replaced him.

Carshalton's first chance came in the tenth minute when Fowler rounded Kingsley Banks and Mark Cranfield managed to slice the ball over his own bar for a corner.

McDonough then sent Rayner through the centre and the Carshalton goalkeeper Searle raced off his line to block the ball.

The visitors took the lead in the 16th minute when a cross from the left saw Smith send a header across goal and just inside the post.

Eight minutes later, a low cross from the left saw Banks dive full stretch but could only palm the ball into the path of Flower to tap in.

Carshalton nearly netted a third goal when the dangerous Haynes broke down the left as his driven cross was nearly turned into his own net by Tony English but Banks dived low to save.

Swifts rallied late in the half and McDonough clipped a free kick just over after Rayner had been fouled.

The interval saw Dean Caldon replace Adcock and shortly after Dave Streetley replaced Paul Roberts as McDonough rolled the last throw of the dice to retrieve something from a game he had hoped to win.

The second half saw Heybridge battling hard with McDonough winning a number of balls in the air but Swifts were unable to seriously threaten the Carshalton defence and with the visitors always dangerous Swifts were lucky not to concede more goals.

Heybridge Swifts: Banks, Cranfield, Fiddes, Sinfield, Roberts, Cook, English, Ball, Adcock, Rayner and McDonough. Substitutes: Reeve (for Cook 4m) Caldon for (Adcock 45m) and Streetley (for Roberts 54m).

Jimmy Case's team to take on Swifts

Former Liverpool and Southampton player Jimmy Case brings his Bashley side to Heybridge for an F.A. Cup second qualifying round tie on Saturday.

For the former star who has been involved in memorable F.A. Cup ties for Liverpool, including scoring the Liverpool goal in their 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the 1977 final, the thrill and magic of the F.A. Cup will still be special.

Bashley are currently in second place in the Dr Martens League Southern Division and will provide Swifts with stiff opposition but Heybridge also have special memories of the F.A.Cup which includes the visit to Bournemouth in the First Round Proper last year.
