Southend United chiefs today gave their reaction to the shock news that boss Alvin Martin may resign if his side are not up with the promotion chasers by Christmas.

Martin dropped his bombshell, reported on last night's This Is Essex, in the wake of Tuesday's 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Mansfield which had fans screaming for his head.

Blues director of football development John Adams, said he had a lot of sympathy with the manager's comments after what was a miserable team performance.

He said: "I think Alvin's response is typical of the man who is honest and forthright - it shows his total integrity towards his job, the club and supporters.

"But what his comments don't show is how hard he works and his determination to do the very best he can to satisfy the club's aims and ambitions.

"I don't think any group of supporters can ask for a more honest and positive approach to what was a frustrating night for everyone on Tuesday.

"The fans who came are part of the Roots Hall family - we all want to see the team successful out on the pitch and the crowd reacted out of bitter disappointment.

"Supporters vented their feelings and Alvin's response is what you would expect from a man who loves the game and this football club.

"I feel Alvin is taking it all on his own shoulders and while managers have to take responsibility, those who go down the tunnel need to take a long, hard look at themselves as well."

Meanwhile Martin had his men in for a heart-to-heart meeting yesterday designed to get things back on track after a nightmare run of just three points from the last six games.

He said: "We had a long talk in the dressing room immediately after Tuesday's game but sometimes you get a more positive feedback after people have had time to dwell on the performance.

"I wanted to get everyone together as soon as possible because we can't have another display like that. It was unacceptable and I've got to put it right.

"I'm confident I know what needs to be done and hopefully the players will take on board what I'm telling them.

"We need to all pull together now and look for a positive response to what was a disastrous night against Mansfield."
