A festive return of Colchester market to High Street now looks unlikely to get the go-ahead.

Borough council officers have warned in a report: "To satisfy the procedures, it is virtually impossible to get the market into the High Street before even Christmas Eve of the weekend before Christmas."

Traders from the Vineyard Street market requested the chance to move their stalls to High Street on Fridays and Saturdaysin the run-up to Christmas and on Christmas Eve itself.

The report is to come before a joint meeting of the planning and transportation and policy and resources committees on Monday.

Council officers accept it is physically possible to accommodate a market between Bank Passage and St Nicholas Passage.

But it would displace the taxi rank and disabled parking, and the appearance of the market was also criticised.
