Chalet owners at Coopers Beach, East Mersea, are angry over plans to force them to move at their own expense.

Leisure Great Britain, which runs the site, claims the change is needed to allow more caravans and repairs to the sea wall, but a group representing more than 70 owners is adamant that the buildings will not survive the upheaval.

Londoner June Pockett said: "These are our holiday homes and it will be very costly to move them. We're willing to fight for the chalets to stay."

The firm is offering alternative sites, a weekend at a Dover holiday park and, for those who want to buy a caravan, free site fees in 1999 .

Manager Bill Elder said it wished to redevelop the site to meet the continuing demand for caravans.
