Youngsters have buried a time capsule in Basildon so future generations can find out what life was like in the 20th century.

The capsule was placed in the foundations of the new glass bell tower at St Martin's Church in the town centre by pupils from Kingswood and Lee Chapel Junior schools and Woodlands Comprehensive School.

The capsule contains letters written by children, filled with their impressions of Basildon and their hopes for the future.

Canon Lionel Webber, rector of Basildon, has also written a piece for the capsule.

Also in the pod is a copy of the Evening Echo, a copy of the council's Basildon District Diary and a company diary from Electronic Office.

The capsule also contains a history of St Martin's Church and its glass bell tower - the first all glass tower to be built in the world.

Buried treasure - youngsters prepare a surprise for future generations
