The second race of the Essex Winter Series saw 38 Chelmsford paddlers on the water on a mild but wet Sunday morning.

Keith Moule teamed up with Dean O'Connor for a decisive victory in the Senior Mixed K2, winning by one minute 20 seconds from a mixed Leaside crew.

Chris Gore/Dean Williams were pleased with eighth place, having not teamed up for some time.

The three Chelmsford ladies crews, although overpowered by the male opposition, had a good competitive race amongst themselves.

First back were the resurrected crew of Lisa Suttle/Hannah Stechman who got away well at the start and stayed in front.

Joanne Edwards /Cheryl Dunn overtook Susan Edwards/Karen Wilcox at the final portage, when Susan had a fall in the slippery conditions, finishing ahead by just 29 seconds.

In the Veteran K1 class, Mike Head had a good burn to the line with Kemp from Barking & Dagenham to beat him by one second in eighth place.

In 11th place, Graham Howe survived the portages on the long course, having sprained his ankle just before launching at the start, finishing in 11th position.

Only three paddlers in the Ladies U18 K1 saw the usual battle between the three.

Lisa Gobell found it hard to stay with her rival from Bishops Stortford and finished second 24 seconds ahead of Taylor from Barking & Dagenham in third.

The same number of paddlers in the Veteran Ladies K1 had a choppy start when combined with the Men's Touring GP class.

Mo Moule managed to survive it the best and went out in front where a strong paddle kept her ahead despite being caught in between portages by Di Edwards who did not cope with them so well.

Mark Boyd was back in force to win the Men's Touring GP event, and push Peter Letch back into second place by 12 seconds.

Alei Duan found the going tough, having become used to a K1 and finished sixth.

Mike Lewis changed classes to paddle in the Veteran GP class and won by only three seconds from Rudland from Herts.

In U16 Ladies K1, Tracey Wilcox was just pipped at the post by 0.5 seconds after a sprint finish with Sharon Hayday from Barking & Dagenham.

Chris Howe was third in the Boys U14 K1 over the short course with Alec Richard just under three minutes behind in fifth.

The organisers at Harlow decided to send the Marathon C2's over the short course much to the paddlers' disappointment.

Roger Edwards/ Ron Dains won again but this time were closely followed by Dave Jeffery/Dave Clarke with Malcolm Burrell/Jo Fisher in third and in his first C2 race, Dave Groves teamed up with Bill Cozens to finish in fourth.

The Touring C2 was won again by a Bishops Stortford crew with Martin Hornsby/Anne Hornsby in second and Alan Suttle/Joan Suttle dropping to fifth from last week's placings.

The Boys U14 GP allowed David Linnell to have another good paddle into second place in 52.46, and he was followed by James Howe in fourth in 58.49.

Overall club results were not available but a quick tallying-up puts Chelmsford just in front again.
