Donkeys Twinkle and Christabel helped a group of senior citizens get into a festive mood.
The pair joined pensioners at the Essex Horse and Pony Protection Society's Christmas tea for its oldest members.
The highlight of the afternoon was a tour around the sanctuary in the Wat Tyler Country Park, Pitsea, to meet some of the 70 horses, ponies and donkeys living there.
Guests were given an update on the progress of the society's animals by founder member Brenda Wilkes.
She said: "Some of our older members are unable to visit us as regularly as they would like so we hold this Christmas tea to thank them for their continued support."
Dorothy Laffeter, 72, was presented with a bouquet as she retired as a voluntary collector for the society.
More volunteers are urgently needed. Anyone interested should call 01268 584603.
