Police have appealed for help in tracking down a convicted murderer who has absconded from an Essex hospital.

An Essex Police spokesman said officers were called to Runwell Hospital in Wickford near Basildon after Philip Wilkinson, 53, disappeared on Friday evening.

On July 2, 1987, at Chelmsford Crown Court Wilkinson had been convicted of the murder of his common law wife at their family home in Jaywick, near Clacton.

He had been serving a life sentence at HMP Kingston in Portsmouth, but was later transferred to Runwell Hospital for medical treatment.

Wilkinson is described as 5ft 10 ins tall, of slim build, with a pale complexion. He has a tattoo of a scroll on his right arm, and has two fingertips missing from his left hand. He may be wearing glasses.

Wilkinson is known to have contacts in Essex.
