A bus driver wearing fancy dress will become a hero of the small screen when he stars in a television news feature.

Colchester-based Ernie Rutter underwent the VIP treatment as he was filmed for Anglia TV's Helen's Heroes - in which those making outstanding contributions to their community are honoured.

Mr Rutter was a founder of the drivers' annual fundraising campaign which has raised many thousands of pounds for Colchester General Hospital's children's ward since 1989.

Every year the drivers have delighted passengers by donning outfits such as Father Christmas, Buttons and ugly sisters.

Amused and bemused members of the public have been donating their small change and last year handed over £2,361.

Helen McDermott, of Anglia TV, said: "The section honours those who have made an outstanding contribution to their community and Ernie certainly has gone above and beyond the call of duty."

Ernie, 50, of Oyster Close, West Mersea, said: "The whole thing was a huge surprise but it was a brilliant day."

The appeal has helped buy medical equipment, computer gear, televisions and a CCTV system for the ward.

The feature will be screen on Anglia TV News between Christmas and the New Year.
