Snow was lying deep and crisp and even when Edith and Sam Bircher got married 60 years ago.

The couple, celebrated their diamond wedding with a family party on Boxing Day, and recalled that far-off day in 1938 when they were married at Fairstead Church.

Mr and Mrs Bircher, who live in St Nicholas Road, Witham, say the secret of their long and happy marriage is they have always cared for each other.

"I look after him and he looks after me," said 82-year-old Mrs Bircher.

Mr Bircher, 85, was born in Bridge Street, Witham, and Mrs Bircher was born in Fairstead. She left school at 14 to go into service, leaving to get married and bring up two children.

Mr Bircher worked as an upholsterer and cabinet maker until retirement although he still enjoys "a bit of woodwork".

The couple belong to the Rivenhall Friendship Club and Mrs Bircher is a member of Witham Women's Institute.

She loves knitting and reading, and they both take great pleasure in their seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
