A teenage girl who died after she was involved in a collision with a car has been named by police.

An Essex Police spokesman said Michelle Condon, 15, of Totlands Drive, Clacton, was crossing Thorpe Road in Clacton when the accident happened.

The Clacton County High pupil received serious head injuries and paramedics tried to stabilise her condition at the scene.

She was taken to Colchester General Hospital but was pronounced dead soon after arrival.

A spokesman for Thorpe traffic police said the accident happened at about 2.10pm yesterday.

Only one car - a Renault Megane - was involved in the incident which took place at the junction of Thorpe Road with Farmleigh Avenue.

"A traffic investigation unit, scenes of crime and two units from Thorpe went to the incident and a full investigation is under way," he said.

"However, it appears to be a tragic accident and there is no suggestion that the driver will be charged with any offence."

The green Renault was travelling between Clacton and Thorpe and was being driven by 60-year-old William Mitchell of Melbourne Road, Clacton-on-Sea. Police are keen to speak to anyone who might have witnessed the incident.

A post mortem will be carried out tomorrow and an inquest will be held in due course, according to an Essex Police spokesman.

Anyone with information should contact Thorpe traffic police on 01255 861455.
