At Chelmsford Golf Club, despite the heavy amount of rain falling in recent days, conditions remained good enough to hold the last two competitions of the outgoing year.

The Barney Cup, traditionally played for on Boxing Day, was presented to the club in 1936 by Miss Barnett in memory of her brother Major Barnett and is played over 18 holes as a pairs, better ball, bogey competition off three quarters handicap.

The cup was a runaway win by the Brewer twins, Ian and Ted off +12, having made +5 on the outward 9 and +7 on the home 9.

In second place, with +7, +4 on the outward 9 and +3 on the home 9, were M.J. and I. Crumpen who took the bronze medals, followed by +4, I. Christerlow and L. Edmonds, on countback from M O'Sullivan and A. Butt.

On +3 were R. and B. Scothern, E. Jones and F. Trott, K and R Goodey and D. and S. Butt, D. Seager and M. O'Reilly.

The remaining competition was the St Lodge Hotel Champagne Cup, which was donated by Amorico Soldani in 1980.

Played over 18 holes as a 2 Club and a putter competition with steady rain throughout the event was won by A. Wade with 34 points. Although Chris Simmons took over as captain of Channels Golf Club at the recent A.G.M. he has still to enjoy his 'drive in".

However, despite the rain and wet conditions underfoot, the gentlemen of Channels played their traditional Boxing Day 'Whiskey Competition" around the smaller Belsteads course and Chris Simmons was able to make his first presentations to the winners.

The winner was John Tearle who scored 44 points, a good result to achieve just before leaving this part of the world and moving to pastures new near to the South Coast.

Colin Green came second with 40 points and Martin De'ath third with 39 points, this latter position being on countback from several other players.
