A Witham woman whose car collided with a herd of deer on the A12 is calling for action to make the road safer.

Sarah Hanness, 31, of Powers Hall End, was driving three friends home in the early hours of New Year's Day when six large deer ran in front of her car near Brentwood.

Her car was written off and two of the animals were killed, but things could have been much worse, says Miss Hanness.

"We could have been killed," she said. "I have spoken to so many other people who have had the same thing happen to them.

"If this is happening over and over again they should put up signs, reduce the speed limit or put up a higher fence."

But Insp Jelley at Brentwood Traffic Police said the infrequency of incidents involving deer meant speed limits would not be lowered.

"They try to make barriers as secure as possible but from time to time wild animals break through or find a way through.

"It's very frightening for the drivers concerned and for the animals. Everyone does their best but you can never plan for wild animals."

He warned drivers to be especially vigilant when driving in rural areas.
