Colchester United manager Steve Wignall - recently rated as one of the Blues' best ever managers - has resigned.

According to the Essex club's website, Wignall took the surprise step after explaining to the board that he felt he could not take the team any further.

Micky Cook and Steve Whitton are in temporary charge for the visit to Stoke City on Saturday.

Ceefax reports that former U's, Norwich and Everton boss Mike Walker is the leading candidate to replace Wiggy, with John Rudge (ex Port Vale), and Micky Adams also mentioned.
