Saturday night will see Gary 'The Hammer' Delaney in action at the Grundy Park Leisure Centre at Cheshunt.

The popular former Matchroom cruiserweight will be taking on Birmingham's Mark Smallwood for the vacant WBO Intercontinental title.

Delaney, a former Commonwealth light heavyweight champion, is confident of beating Smallwood even though the Brummy has lost only one of his 16 contests.

The South Weald-based Delaney has a good record - 24 wins and a draw from his 27 fights, but has been out of the ring for several months.

After such a long time on the sidelines, he is now hoping his new-found alliance with Frank Warren's Sports Network will give his career the kickstart it needs to set him back on the road to major honours.

The early signs are good. Warren has promised Delaney a shot at the WBO world title in the summer - providing, of course, he can win this weekend and then take Bruce Scott's British and Commonwealth titles from him when they meet in the near future.

Matchroom's Ojay Abrahams will have a tough task ahead of him on the same bill when he meets Croydon's Wayne Alexander.

Alexander has won all 10 of his fights to date and recorded knockouts in nine of them. Not surprisingly, Frank Warren is confident his man will land the British light middleweight title sometime this year.

Whether Abrahams has what it takes to spoil those plans when they meet to contest the vacant Southern Area title is debatable, but the flamboyant boxer from Watford is unlikely to roll over.

This will be an important contest for Abrahams if he is to put himself back into the frame for honours.

Harlow boxer Steve Murray is another man Warren expects to win a British title.

Still a relative newcomer to the professional game, Murray won his first two contests in the super featherweight division by knockouts and has now stepped up to the lightweight division. At Cheshunt he will come up against Mark Smith from Swansea.

Forest Hill's unbeaten Spencer Fearon will meet George Richards, and Birmingham's Malcolm Melvin takes part in the eliminator for the British light welterweight championship against Junior Witter.

Also on the bill, Hackney's Jason Matthews takes part in an eight round contest prior to challenging Paul 'Silky' Jones for the Commonwealth middleweight title on February 27.

Garry Delaney . . . his contest against Mark Smallwood on Saturday will be the first of a three-step course to the WBO world title.
