A Tendring division police officer is being investigated over allegations of misconduct at a private Christmas party in Clacton.

The officer - who has not been named by Essex Police - has not been suspended and is still on duty.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said today: "An internal investigation is being conducted following the allegations of misconduct at a Christmas party which was a private function attended by off-duty officers.

"The initial allegations relate to one officer but we are seeking accounts from other officers present."

The investigation is being headed by Detective Chief Insp Bob Seals. The officer could face internal disciplinary proceedings for misconduct if the allegations are found proved.

The spokeswoman added: "No-one has been suspended from duty and while the investigation is ongoing no further comment can be made."

She said it was impossible to say just how long the investigation could take.

Should any evidence of a crime being committed be found, the matter would be referred on to the Crime Prosecution Service.

"It is fair to say that would be the case in any internal investigation carried out into an officer," said the spokeswoman.
