A man was being quizzed by detectives today in connection with the death of Clacton doorman Gary Chick.

Police arrested a 27-year-old man at around 6am today in Clacton.

The man was arrested on suspicion of murdering Mr Chick in November 1996.

He was taken to Clacton Police Station where detectives were today questioning him.

Detectives relaunched the murder inquiry late last year after a new witness came forward.

An incident room was set up at Thorpe in the hope of getting new information.

During the investigation into Mr Chick's death, six people have been arrested but no-one has ever been charged.

Mr Chick, 40, of Kingsman Drive, died on November 17 1996 at about 2.50am while walking with his girlfriend along Clacton seafront.

He died by the memorial gardens in Marine Parade West, Clacton.

He had earlier met up with his girlfriend Rosalind Vaughan after finishing work at the nearby Fibbers nightclub.

They had gone to the Waverley Hall Hotel and Mr Chick was attacked by a group of men shortly after they left.

Mr Chick was part of a close-knit family and lived with his mother and three daughters - Laura, Roxanne and Jennifer.

His mother, Joyce, has made several emotional appeals and told of the trauma of living without her son.

She said: "It's terrible. Every day I dust his photo and I kiss him every morning and every night before I go to bed.

"I still can't believe it."
