Another mother and child statue is coming to Basildon town centre - this time with an African flavour.

The welded piece of modern art was made by world famous Nigerian sculptress Sokari Douglas-Camp when she visited the town's Fryerns School in 1987.

During her visit she made sculptures on the theme of the circus with pupils and also created the African mother and child figure in her spare time.

The work is a reproduction of the New Town's mother and child statue in the Town Square.

The sculpture, which has been kept at Fryerns until now, will be given to the council later this year when the Craylands school closes.

The steel statue's new home is expected to be either the town centre library or the council offices in the Basildon Centre, St Martin's Square.

Teacher Paul Routledge, said: "We're absolutley delighted that there will be a lasting reminder of Fryerns School in the town centre. There will be an official handing over ceremony and a plaque made about the school to go with the statue."

Careful - Fryerns pupils reveal the African statue which will soon take pride of place in the town centre
