A bogus water official has tricked pensioners out of £3,000.

The thief tricked six residents - mainly in their 80s and 90s - out of cash after getting into their homes by saying there was a water leak.

Homes in Clacton, Frinton and Thorpe were struck last night during the two-hour spree.

Police are investigating whether there are links between the thefts and other bogus callers in Danbury, Maldon and Earls Colne.

Det Sgt Tony Adams, of Clacton CID, said: "It is particularly cowardly targeting elderly people.

"It obviously causes a lot of distress and we are keen to identify the person as quickly as possible."

He added the man posed as a water board official and said a water main had burst and that he needed to gain immediate access to the house.

The man showed no identification and while the residents were distracted he stole cash from the homes.

Cash was stolen from most of the homes which totalled £3,000. All of the victims were pensioners who lived in blocks of flats.

The man is described as about 5ft 10ins, in his early 30s, with short dark hair. He is of medium build and wore clothing which could have been overalls or trousers and a short jacket which were dark blue. He spoke with a Celtic accent.

Mr Adams warned other residents to be on their guard against callers.

He said: "If you get anyone on your doorstep trying to gain immediate access I would suggest you don't allow access and identification. Any bona fide official won't mind."

All the thefts took place between 4.30pm and 7pm yesterday.

The conman started at Romney Close, Clacton and then went on to:

Oulton Hall, Church Road, Clacton

Albany Chase, Clacton

Cumberland Court, Holland Road, Clacton

Queens Court, Queens Road, Frinton

Norfolk House, High Street, Thorpe.
