Maverick Essex MP Teresa Gorman has called for women colleagues to be offered chastity belts - after it was revealed several male MPs are on Viagra!

Her outspoken comments came after Dr Howard Stoate, Labour MP for Dartford, admitted he had prescribed the anti-impotence drug to colleagues at Westminster.

He was pointing out that MPs who spend the week away from home often find it difficult to get access to good confidential medical advice.

He said there should be a structured system which allowed them to seek help and was adamant that prescribing Viagra to colleagues had not breached the rules, which say anyone can obtain the drug on private prescription from a qualified person.

Dr Stoate told BBC Radio 4's Today programme he did not want to say how many colleagues he had prescribed Viagra for, but added: "They are responsible, sensible, adult people. They had a problem they wished to discuss and I was able to give them the help and advice they needed."

Tory Mrs Gorman, MP for Billericay, urged Parliament to publish a list of MPs receiving the drug and remarked: "As a woman in the House of Commons, it seems we may well be at risk.

"Perhaps women MPs should be issued with chastity belts."

Dr Stoate said Mrs Gorman was "out of order to start talking that rubbish".
