New Rochford captain Richard Campbell-Carr was so nervous before stepping onto the tee for his driving in ceremony that he went for a lesson 15 minutes beforehand.

However, that didn't stop him spanking a superb effort nearly 240 yards down the fairway - one of the best ever at the club's drive-ins.

The two clubs and putter competition played in conjunction went to Talat Buta on 20 points from vice-captain David Turner (18).

Rochford Ladies silver medal was won by 12 handicapper Sue Proctor with a net 81 from Lyanne Loveday (7) 83. Rosemarie Gemmell (10) beat Janice Hazledine (11) on countback after both finished on net 86.

Bronze victory went to Jill Austin (109-24=85) from Tina Dye (108-22=86) and Pauline Cousins (110-21=89).

New Thorpe Hall lady captain Barbara Ridgwell's affection for the songs of great American pop star Buddy Holly was a major part of her driving-in ceremony.

It will be very much a case of "Listen To Me" for the Thorpe Ladies this year as eight of them dressed up as the legendary 60's star, who died 40 years ago in a plane crash, for Barbara's big moment.

Barbara swung into action to the accompaniment of one of Buddy's biggest hits "That'll Be The Day" and it certainly wasn't "Raining in My Heart" for Mrs J. Dean.

She won the drive-in competition with a total of 26 points.

It was her first ever victory - you could say that it's not "Everyday" that she wins - and she was presented with a trophy depicting a lady golfer.

The event was a Stapleford and other leading positions were: 2, Mrs H. James (24); 3, Mrs B. Lockhart (23); 4, Mrs F. Ginn (23); 5, Mrs E. de Vries (22); 6, Mrs M. Moody (22).

Thorpe's nine-hole medal draw was played under trying conditions with only half the course open due to the recent bad weather.

Mrs M. Lindeman managed to play some good golf and achieved a 38.5 net score off a handicap of 29.

Mrs I. Johnson was just pipped to the post, scoring 40.5. This was a very encouraging performance for a high handicap player. She plays off 45.

Third-placed Mrs A. Swallow (20) played steadily for 41 net.

The two-clubs and putter event, also held over nine holes, went to Mrs A. Caink (18 points), who did very well to play to her handicap with just three clubs on a freezing cold and windy day.

The sun came out, the course dried out, and over half the male membership of Befairs played the February medal with Cieran O'Hart (14) winning Division One on net 64 from Barry Meddle (14) 66 and Bob Mace (9) 67.

Division Two went to Reg Owers (17) 64 from Terry Silverton (18) 65 and Alan Pace (15) 67. Peter Hayman (22) won Division Three on 68 from Brian Stavey (23) 71 and David Williams (19) 72.

Belfairs Ladies Division One medal was won by Mrs H. Lovett while Mrs J. Dowding took Division Two
