Home-owners in the Walton area have been warned to be on their guard after a conman posing as a water authority worker visited two homes in the town.
An Essex Police spokesman said the man, believed to be a burglar, had called on two homes in Walton during Thursday afternoon, although he was unable to steal anything at either address thanks to the vigilance of the homeowners.
Officers are keen to alert the public to the danger and to ask people to be on their guard should the man call.
He has been described as white, aged about 25, of medium build, about 5ft 8in tall, with short black hair. He was wearing a blue-grey anorak and black trousers.
