A driver had a lucky escape from serious injury after a collision with a Transit van.

Police are looking for the van driver, who is said to have disappeared and left the vehicle at the scene.

The 25-year-old driver of the red BMW was believed to have suffered whiplash injuries following the crash at the junction of Alma Road and London Road in Benfleet.

A crew from Hadleigh fire station were called to the scene but were not needed to cut anyone free.

Acting sub officer Russell Freeman said: "He was extremely lucky. Both vehicles were a write-off."

It is believed the Transit van's engine was still running when help arrived and that the driver was not at the scene.

Anyone with information about the accident, which happened at about 8.30pm on Thursday is asked to contact Laindon traffic police on 01268 541312.
