The Bishop of Colchester said his "thoughts and prayers" went out to the families of the dead and injured.
The Rt Rev Edward Holland said: "This is a dreadful tragedy. I just feel a weariness that there seems to be no end to the violence."
He added: "It brings it home when the victims are from our own community. It is so terribly sad and our thoughts must go out to those who are suffering."
