Soccer fans bathed in warm Bank Holiday sunshine at Southchurch Park as the game paid tribute to one of the greats of the local game, Malcolm Frost.

He died last year after a long, brave battle against cancer and the Southend Manor club staged a football festival in his memory.

First on the bill was a match between Manor's own under-16 side against an Eastern Alliance X1 - a game made all the more poignant by the fact that the home outfit was skippered by Malcolm's son Robert.

The Frost family were out in force along with other willing volunterers, selling raffle tickets and raising cash for the main object of the day -- to make a healthy donation to Fairhavens Hospice.

The top soccer attraction was a match between Manor's current senior side and a team made up of former members of the Southchurch Park-based outfit.

The "golden oldies", not surprisingly in very warm conditions, made several changes as the action wore on and the current Manor side finally won by a 4-2 margin.

Said Manor chairman Bob Westley: "It was a wonderful day in glorious weather conditions and, despite a number of Bank Holiday counter-attractions, well over 200 people attended in all.

"I'm sure there were a lot of tired limbs afterwards among the former Manor line-up, but everybody rallied to the cause superbly and we'll be making what I'm sure will be a very good donation to Fairhavens once the final amount raised is tallied up."

A dramatic penalty shoot-out was the only way to sort out the Basildon and District Sunday League Division One cup final between Murrayfield and Holy Trinity.

Both teams spurned good chances but the match was 0-0 after 90 minutes which meant extra time loomed.

Healey for Trinity and Gregory for Murrayfield missed chances in the 30-minute period of extra time, which ended in a stalemate. Murrayfield - pictured above with the cup - finally won 4-3 after brilliant saves from both keepers.

In the Senior Division, Rettenden looked to be coasting against Pitsea after going up 4-1 with just 15 minutes to go.

However, Pitsea put on a final burst of steam which saw them level the game at 4-4.

In Division One, Armada Sports rediscovered their lost form with a conclusive 6-0 victor over mid-table Vange WMC (Res).

Yardley went 3-0 up against Ryde in Division Three, before Ryde fought back to make it 3-3.

Then Yardley gave away an own goal before they pulled one back to level the scores at 4-4.
