An embarrassed teenage boy was rescued from a tree after becoming too frightened to climb down.

It took the youngster's friends an hour to realise he really was stuck before calling out firemen to Chalkwell Park.

A blue watch spokesman for Leigh fire station said: "There were three boys playing and the 14 to 15-year-old lad legged it up a tree into the foliage and he couldn't get down.

"They reckon he was up there for an hour before they decided to call us out yesterday evening. He was grateful to get back on the ground but then just ran off embarrassed.

"He got up there and was too frightened to come down.

"The branches were quite spanned out and he was quite high up."
