Thorpe Bay tasted victory in the Essex Intermediate Cup despite three of the games going to three sets.

Jon Lee, Simon Cuthbert, David Tubbs and Graham Bloomfield were the successful players who notched up the 4-0 win over Redbridge.

There was success in the Ladies' Senior Cup too for Thorpe Bay when Kirsten Warner, Chloe Taylor, Sophie Owles and Mandy Acton beat Gidea Park 4-0. The quarter-final win sees Thorpe Bay through to the semis.

Things were not so good for Thorpe Bay's veterans, who lost 3-5 to Frinton in the over-45 Veteran's Division One.

Southend Lawn's youngsters beat Chigwell's David Lloyd Centre 3-1 in the Junior Cup. John Harris, Mark Connolly, Graham Taylor and Dave Allen made up the winning quartet.

Westcliff Lawn's second team lost 3-1 to Westcliff Hard Courts in the Ladies' Senior Cup.

The Lawn's men's team drew 2-2 against Woodford Wells, but won the tie on set countback. Steve Wynn, Rick Barham, Graham Goodale and Bryan Rivers represented Lawn.

In the Intermediate Cup, Westcliff Lawn men's second team beat David Lloyd Chigwell 4-0.

Westcliff Hard Courts' men's second team were defeated 3-1 by Avenue in the Senior Cup.

In the Premier Singles, Westcliff Hard won on set countback after drawing 3-3 with Harpenden.

Shane Hurst lost in three sets to Hamid Hejazi, before Simon Bonham levelled for the Hard by defeating Simon Bramwell.

Richard Barham lost in two sets to Mark George, who used to play for the Hard Courts as a junior around ten years ago.

However, Simon Chesher beat Nick Morton in two sets to ensure the draw.

The Hard team are away to Newmarket on Saturday in the Premier Singles. A victory should be enough to ensure promotion to the National League.

Essex County enjoyed a 4-0 win against Norfolk with Ashley Compton-Dando, Phil O'Leary, Graham Goodale and Wayne Lemoine delivering the goods.

June Pierce will be in action at the National Veterans' Hard Court Open Championships at Queenswood Tennis Centre in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, next week.

The county veteran player will be contesting the over-60 singles and doubles.

Joining her will be Sue Blackshaw and Brenda Corlett who will be competing in the over-40 doubles.

The Play Tennis 99 open day at Thorpe Bay tennis club was a success with around 100 people attending for a day's free tennis and coaching.
