Last weekend was a busy one for the Shaftesbury Cycling Club, and although Saturday was a miserable day weatherwise, many of the local racing cyclists went to support the Glendene CC 10 miles time trial on the A11.

There were 60 entries but the heavens opened just as the First riders were sent off by the timekeeper and 18 decided that the conditions were just too bad to start -- and three riders did not finish.

The Glendene managed to find a winner from their own ranks with Brian McCarthy (last man off), who put up a superlative ride in the gale force wind and rainy conditions to record a time of 22.50.

He was half a minute ahead of the second rider Paul Shuttleworth in 24.23 and another Glendene rider, Murat Ozdenya, took third place in 24.35.

These were times that were recorded 40 years ago, so it proved just how hard the conditions were.

The only Shaftesbury rider to finish was Lorna Hanlon, who on her first race this year recorded one of her slowest times for many years to win the ladies race with 29.17.

Sunday turned out bright and breezy for the Shaftesbury Club 25 miles on the Highwood-Ongar course.

There was a massive turnout of 24 entries and nearly as many other club folk turned out to marshall around the course.

19 riders completed the event which was won by Bruce Robinson in a fine time of 1.00.04, beating Ieuan Reed by 55 seconds and Ken Mills by one minute 50 seconds.

Bruce also took the Fastest Veteran on Standard award. First handicap was won by Howard Baker, second handicap by Steve Ersser, third Mick Dodge, fourth David Rhodes, fifth Stephen Allen.

Afterwards the club held a map reading competition and the day was successfully rounded off by a barbecue, run by Lily and George Shakespeare.
