Lars Unger revealed today that he hoped to sign for a Nationwide First Division club in time for the start of next season.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who has just returned home to German Second Division side Fortuna Dusseldorf after completing a loan spell with Southend United, expects to fly over for talks with English club officials this week.

"I want to continue playing in England and hope to sort out my future very soon," said the former German under-21 international, who made 14 league appearances for the Shrimpers.

"Scouts have been watching my performances at Roots Hall and I expect to be meeting up with representatives from a couple of First Division teams who are interested in signing me this week."

Unger, who is a product of crack German Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen's youth system, said he would prefer to play in England than back in his own country.

"I have enjoyed my time with Southend and I would like to continue my playing career in England," he said.

"My current team - Fortuna Dusseldorf - are heading for relegation to the Third Division and I have the opportunity of joining other German Second Division sides, but England is where I want to play."

Unger said he had enjoyed his time at Roots Hall and paid tribute to Blues' fans for making him feel welcome.

"Coming to Southend has been a great experience for me and I would like to thank all the club's fans for their kindness," he added.

"From day one they have gone out of their way to make me feel at home and with their support it didn't take me long to settle down in a different country.

"It was great playing for them and I hope they have better times to look forward to next season."

Unger picked out the Seasiders' 3-0 away victory at Leyton Orient as the highlight of his brief Southend career.

"I will always remember the win at Orient as it was a great game played in a marvellous atmosphere," he said.

"It went a long way to helping Southend stay in the league and I'd like to think that I played my part in keeping them up."
