Mental patients at Runwell Hospital today spoke of their hurt and confusion after a nursing home planned for them was refused.

Runwell is to close within the next two years. Patients were excited about plans to move to a 12-bedroom home in Long Road, Canvey.

However, Castle Point councillors rejected the unit, citing neighbours' worries about its town centre location.

More than 2,000 islanders objected to the proposal, amid continued calls for a tough stand against the home.

Developer Moat Housing, along with care providers MCCH Society, has tried to allay fears about the potential residents.

A spokesman said patients had all been assessed by professional staff and deemed suitable.

He added: "The potential residents for the Long Road scheme have access to local newspapers and are hurt and confused about the comments reported from Canvey residents.

"They cannot understand why they are being described as 'violent and dangerous'. They have lived at Runwell for many years and had been looking forward to this move into the community.

"Canvey is an area they have connections with and a place they are familiar with. They have visited, and continue to visit, Canvey on outings and in their own words, have caused 'no trouble to anyone'."

The spokesman said Moat was still considering its options - including a possible appeal against the decision.
