A burglar punched a woman in the face after she found him ransacking her house. It is thought the incident may be linked to two other raids.

Insp Richard Day said the woman arrived home in Main Road, Great Holland, at 12.15pm last Thursday to find a burglar on her stairway.

The man tried to get out but went into a toilet by mistake. When he came out he punched the woman in the face and knocked her out of the way before fleeing.

A total of £2,000 worth of jewellery was taken.

The man was in his 30s, with short cropped hair, of medium build, 5ft 4ins-5ft 6ins tall, and with a possibly goatee beard. He wore a red and black striped top and black trousers.

In other incidents, £2,000 worth of jewellery was taken from a home in Carisbrooke Avenue, Clacton, during Thursday daytime. Burglars caused £1,000 worth of damage.

And in Hazelmere Road, Holland-on-sea, more jewels were taken during yesterday daytime.

Anyone with details should call Clacton Police on 01255 221312.
