A man needed 60 stitches to his face after an unprovoked attack in which he was repeatedly slashed with a broken bottle.

The 23-year-old was left dazed and bleeding following the savage attack which is likely to leave him physically and mentally scarred for the rest of his life.

He was today recovering at home from his ordeal.

Detectives want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the savage attack which happened at around midnight outside the Central railway station in Southend on Saturday.

They have described it as a truly horrendous attack.

A spokesman for Southend police said: "This appears to have been a motiveless and vicious assault which left two men needing hospital treatment.

"It all seems to have started when the two victims - both aged 23 - were approached by a bare-chested man of mixed race, who started having a go at them.

"A man in a blue shirt then got involved striking one man on the head with a glass bottle which smashed.

"That same broken bottle was then used to attack the second man who needed a lot of stitches to his face."

The man in the blue shirt was white, in his early 20s and 5ft 10in tall. He had short, brown hair.

The other victim was treated for a cut cheek.
