Player-manager Julian Hazel looks set to leave Ryman League Wivenhoe Town after being granted a transfer request.

The 25-year-old former Colchester United striker will spark off a cash scramble for his signature with the Dragons expecting to receive a four-figure fee for Hazel who still has two years left on his contract.

Hazel's availability is likely to interest big-spending Essex clubs such as Braintree and Clacton, although they could well face competition from top non-league clubs up to Conference level.

Wivenhoe co-boss Steve Pitt said: "We've reluctantly agreed to his request. Basically his earning capacity is way in excess of that a club like ourselves can afford to pay.

"He's getting married next year and has a young child as well. Basically his football income is fundamental to his existence and we can understand that."

Pitt, who is handling all enquiries for the player, stressed the price would have to be right for the club to sell, a comment echoed by club chairman Dave Whymark.

He said: "He won't be allowed to go unless we get what we want for him.

"Last season we had an approach from a Conference club that we didn't pursue.

"Once he's fully fit he could play at that level, but we certainly haven't given up hope of keeping him at this stage."

Only last week Hazel, who was part of a four-man management team at Broad Lane, picked up a trophy as leading goalscorer in Ryman League Division Two. He scored 25 league goals plus six in cup competitions.

Lee Neale, another management team member, is also leaving Broad Lane so Pitt and Joff March will run the side this season.
