Maritime officials will carry out their annual survey this summer of the old US navy ship packed with explosives off the Southend coast.

Tenders still have to be agreed before experts can check the stability of SS Richard Montgomery.

In 1944 the American Liberty ship split in two as it ran aground on the Sheerness Iddle Sand.

Half of the vessel's 9,000-ton cargo of bombs and detonators was salvaged but by 1952 experts decided the best approach was to leave the remaining explosives where they were.

The most recent sonar survey of the wreck showed there has been no significant change in the Montgomery's structure.

The survey revealed there had been some scouring to the seabed near the wreck but the ground was still stable.

Official analysis of the vessel suggests the risk of a major explosion is "remote".
