A man has died and four other people were injured in serious crash on Chelmsford's Army and Navy flyover.

The flyover was closed for 12 hours after the accident which happened at 7.15pm on Sunday evening.

A gold Ford Escort carrying two men and a woman was travelling towards Chelmsford when it drove on to the flyover and was involved in a collision with a dark coloured Ford Escort travelling in the other direction.

Fire crews from Chelmsford, Great Baddow and Colchester battled for more than an hour to rescue those trapped in the wreckage.

The dead man is believed to be from Canvey Island.

The two people in the other Escort, an elderly couple from Burnham, had to be cut from the wreckage by firefighters.

They were later released from Chelmsford's Broomfield Hospital.

The name of the dead driver and the seriously injured passengers will not be released until next of kin have been informed.

The flyover, which operates a one-way system, was opened at 7am Monday.
