Police have appealed for witnesses after a man was killed in a horrific crash in Wickford on Sunday night.
The head-on collision between two cars happened in Nevendon Road at about 7.15pm.
The driver of one car, from Hornchurch, is believed to have died instantly.
His identity was being withheld until relatives had been informed.
The 46-year-old man who was driving a small Bedford van, was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other people except for the other driver, who was in a Ford Sierra, were involved in the crash.
Nevendon Road was closed for more than an hour while Basildon firemen cut the drivers free.
Police confirmed a man was in custody in connection with the accident.
Traffic police were carrying out further investigations and were appealing for witnesses.
