Intrepid young reporters from Larkrise County Primary School in Chelmsford have interviewed the editor of the Times newspaper Peter Stothard.

Mr Stothard, a former pupil at the school, faced tough questions about his work and childhood memories during the interview which will be included in the world's biggest internet project for schools.

Nine and 10-year-old pupils from the school travelled to the Times headquarters in London to ask him questions for a report to be featured on the school's website, Tesco SchoolNet 2000, and in the Millennium Dome.

The children were also invited on a tour of the newsrooms and printing area.

Head teacher, Valerie Webb, said: "This has been an excellent way for the children to learn more about the internet and to use it for a real purpose."

Each school in the UK will have a page on the Tesco website, featuring reports and pictures by every child on the subject of the past, present and future.

A massive 340 internet centres comprising computers, printers, scanners and digital cameras have been set up around the country in Tesco stores and in libraries.

Advisory teacher for Tesco SchoolNet 2000, Malcolm Moss, said: "These young people will be recording life at the end of this millennium and creating a lasting record for the next.

"Their work will be seen all over the world and featured in the learning zone of the Dome."
