Thirteen-year-old Chelmsford chess prodigy Alastair Hung (above) will be taking on UK Grand Masters Matthew Saddler and John Speelman in the UK chess championships at Nottingham University this month.

And in August he will be taking part in the British championships at Scarborough.

Alastair, a student at King Edward VI Grammar School, lives in Great Leighs.

KEGS deputy head David Mansfield said: "Alastair is a great lad -- extremely polite and an absolute genius at the game.

"We are very proud of him."

Alastair's mother, Mrs Poey Hung, said: "To get to the UK finals, Alastair had to start off with 30,000 hopefuls.

"He is a member of Writtle Chess Club, which has helped him enormously since he took to the game when he was 10. He is a good boy and plans to be a lawyer."
