A Laindon couple have been charged with cruelty after a baby was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The man has also been charged with grievous bodily harm after being quizzed by police officers from the Rayleigh Child Protection Unit since Wednesday.

The six-week-old baby was today in a serious but stable condition in Basildon Hospital's intensive care unit.

A police spokeswoman said: "The baby is thought to be out of danger.

"He received serious head injuries, bearing in mind that he is just six weeks old."

The couple, both in their twenties, were put on conditional bail until August 5 when they will appear at Basildon Magistrates Court.
