Plans for a major extension to the Tesco store in Maldon which would almost double its size have been given the thumbs down by town councillors.

Councillors on the planning committee voted this week by a narrow margin to oppose an application to increase the size of the store's retail space at the Fullbridge site.

Council clerk, Helen Vincent, said: "Councillors objected to the plans on the grounds that they are out of context with the building and would result in a considerable loss of green space."

Cllr Ms Alison Lamb said later: "I would like to protect the two green spaces, but I don't know under the circumstances whether it's possible, as those particular spaces have always been earmarked as an industrial site - it's a bit of a grey area.

"A number of us also have concerns about the proposed extended store competing with the High Street traders, especially if they introduce clothing."

Cllr Eric Bannister, speaking after the meeting, said he felt that it was wrong to try to prevent the development.

"Retail is retail and I believe it's absolutely wrong to try and stop the store from developing and putting something back into Maldon," he said.

An application has been lodged with Maldon District Council to extend the store from its current 25,350 sq ft to 44,660 sq ft.

Plans also include additional car parking for disabled people and parents with toddlers, as well as transport facilities and additional landscaping.

Tesco is proposing a new entrance, wider aisles, a wider choice of food and more checkouts.

The application will be considered shortly by the district council's planning committee.
