Essex Training & Enterprise Council (TEC) has announced the winners of their new 1999 Equal Opportunities Awards for Suppliers.

The scheme, which is in its first year of operation, has been initiated by Essex TEC to reward those companies who have shown outstanding work in addressing specific training issues for disadvantaged persons in Essex.

This year's winners, who have all been judged to have instigated something new and innovative to help further equality of opportunity include:

Essex County Council Youth Training and Employment Unit, for initiating compulsory Equalities Workshops for all young people taking part in their Work Based Training Programmes;

Endaim Ltd, for their work with employers for a promotion to attract young males into the hairdressing industry;

Chelmsford Training Services, for their work with a blind youth trainee who successfully achieved an NVQ Level One in Information Technology.

Jenny Keedwell, development co-ordinator for Equal Opportunities at Essex TEC said: "The issue of equal opportunities is high on the government's agenda.

''This award scheme provides Essex TEC with the opportunity to encourage training suppliers to work towards creating better opportunities for all, and to reward those companies who make great efforts to assist disadvantaged persons to realise their full potential."
