Police are examining closed circuit television footage after an early morning sex attack near a Chelmsford park.

The 37-year-old victim was walking home by Bellmead Park around 3.25 on Saturday when she was indecently assaulted.

Ds Pete Redman, of Chelmsford police, said that the woman managed to fight off her attacker, who ran away towards Chelmsford town centre.

The victim managed to punch the man, but suffered a face injury.

She had been approached from behind, said Ds Redman. The incident had terrified her and she had been offered counselling.

"It was a frightening attack on the woman, who did well to fight him off," said Ds Redman.

"We are looking at CCTV film to try to identify the attacker."

He said that police were looking for a man aged about 20, of medium build, with short, dark hair. He could be slightly injured.

Anyone who was in the area in the early hours of Saturday and could help police is asked to contact Ds Redman on 01245 491212, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
