Little Baddow's picturesque Paper Mill Lock played host on Sunday for the first time to the annual Boating Festival.

Organised by The Friends of the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation, the fun-filled event began in sunshine, but ended in showers.

Despite the changeable weather there was a wide variety of land-based entertainment including children's fun rides, arts and crafts workshops, displays and exhibitions by local organisations.

Water-borne activities included boat trips on the Navigation's cruise boat Victoria. There were also steam boat trips, canoeing and a boat handling contest to test the sea legs.

Boating Festival 99 raised money towards the work of The Friends, said organiser Chris Copping.

The art of canal painting was displayed by Judith Abbott, of Blackwater.
