The weather was kind for the Essex Cycle Racing Association "50" last weekend, and some spectacular times resulted.

Cambridge University star Michael Hutchinson recorded another victory, this time at the expense of the 1998 British Best all Rounder, Kevin Dawson, who was riding for Pete Read R.T.

Their respective times were 1 hour 38 minutes 29 seconds and 1 hour 40 minutes 25 seconds.

A close third in 1.40.35 was Gethin Butler (Team Men's Health) who was runner-up in the 1998 British B.A.R. contest.

For the Chelmer Cycling Club, Bill Broadfield clocked a personal best of 1h 52m 01s, a new club record for the 50-60 age group. George Boden's 2.2.59 was also a personal best.

This year's Chelmer Cycling Club's club championship will be decided by a points system instead of the traditional events.

Leading the best four of six events at the end of August are: (1) Adrian Tovey, 77, (2), Dave Nock, 76, and (3), Garry Barton, 71.

The Handicap Cup standings (best six of nine events) are: (1), Adrian Tovey, 147, (2), Dave Nock, 138 and (3), Graham Painter, 137.

The Points Competition leaders (best 17 of 21 events) are: (1) Dave Nock, 408, (2), Garry Barton, 395 and (3), Adrian Tovey 384.

The winner of the Junior Trophy for 1999 is a new member, Andrew Gilbert of Great Waltham.

The Bank Holiday weekend saw a number of members of the Glendene Cycling Club in action.

The most successful was Tony Woodcock who was first in his age category in the Kentish Hop LVRC race.

On Sunday morning the club's time trialists had entered the Essex Cycle Racing Association 50-mile event at Hatfield Peverel on the A12.

Only three Glendeners were on the start sheet for the event, which was run in near perfect conditions.

Darryl Leese was fastest to finish with 1 hr 59m 44s, while Andy Beaman came home in a time of 2 hrs 1m 0s.

Richard Shaw was unfortunate to puncture after 38 miles, a distance he had covered in 1 hr 28m.
